5 Benefits of Using Masks

Wearing a mask offers numerous advantages. It can protect you from inhaling respiratory hazards such as dust particles, smoke, poor air quality, and germs. Masks also help safeguard others by reducing the spread of infections if you are ill.

Research has demonstrated that wearing masks, in conjunction with social distancing, significantly decreases the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. KN95 and N95 respirators have shown to provide stronger protection.

Benefits of Mask Usage

1. Prevents the Spread of Germs

Masks can prevent the spread of germs if you are currently sick. Wearing a mask decreases the likelihood of releasing and spreading germs into the surrounding air.

2. Prevents You from Getting Sick

Infectious diseases can be transmitted through exposure to droplets containing harmful microbes. Masks protect you from inhaling these droplets during breathing, coughing, sneezing, or talking from others.

A study indicated that a person wearing a mask is relatively protected from exposure to infectious droplets from individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2. Wearing a mask on just one person is better than having no one masked.

3. Protects People with a Weak Immune System

Masks provide protection for individuals with compromised immune systems. They reduce the level or likelihood of exposure to germs that could severely harm you, especially if your immune system is not functioning properly.

Immune system deficiencies can arise from:

  • Chronic illnesses like diabetes or cancer
  • Conditions like HIV
  • Immunosuppressive treatments such as chemotherapy

4. Reduces Exposure to Allergens

Wearing a mask can lessen your exposure to allergens, particularly if you are allergic to them. A mask covering your mouth and nose helps filter pollen or irritants. Masks also adjust humidity levels and the temperature of the air you breathe, which can alleviate chronic allergy symptoms.

5. Protects You from Poor Air Quality

Using a mask can shield your respiratory system and overall health when air quality is poor due to pollution. Air quality indices (AQI) categorize air quality from moderate to hazardous.

AQI measures levels of the following pollutants under the Clean Air Act:

  • Carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide: Gases from motor vehicles and industrial processes
  • Ground-level ozone: A gas present in the atmosphere that becomes smog when it reaches the ground
  • Particulate pollution: Particles made from sulfates, nitrates, carbon, and mineral dust

Who Should Wear a Mask?

All children and healthy adults should wear masks whenever necessary. Consult with a healthcare provider to determine if and when you need to wear a mask if you are ill or at risk for serious illness.

Individuals who should not wear masks, or may not be able to wear them, include:

  • Children under two years of age
  • Individuals who cannot remove a mask without assistance
  • Individuals with breathing difficulties
  • Individuals with certain disabilities that make wearing a mask challenging (e.g., those sensitive to having something on their face)

Choosing the Right Mask

An effective mask must fit well: not too tight and not too loose. Additionally, it should have high particle and droplet filtration, usually measured by percentage. A high filtration rate indicates that the mask effectively protects you from these particles and droplets.

The most effective masks are those approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH-approved masks (or respirators) fit properly and often have a filtration rate over 95%. These masks also provide the best protection for you and others when worn correctly.

Another option includes international respirators with filters (such as KN95). They provide at least 80% filtration and also fit well. Other masks include face coverings, disposable masks, and fabric masks with varying filtration and fit. While disposable masks may not be as effective as N95 or KN95, they are more readily available, comfortable to wear, and better than fabric masks or no mask at all.

Other Considerations

Follow this guide for proper mask usage:

  • Inspect the mask for any damage; use a new mask if there are defects like holes or broken parts.
  • Select a mask with multiple layers and preferably a nose wire for a good fit on your face.
  • Ensure that your mask covers both your mouth and nose comfortably yet securely on your face.
  • Wash your hands before placing the mask on your face.

You can wear a fabric mask over a disposable mask or a mask band over disposable or fabric masks too. You can also tie and tuck the ear loops of three-layer masks.

A Quick Review

Masks have been used to protect against COVID and other infectious diseases. They offer additional benefits as well. Masks may help prevent allergic symptoms from worsening or protect you from exposure to pollutants.

NIOSH-approved masks are the most effective, although other masks may also be beneficial depending on the type. While not everyone can wear a mask, you should, if possible, wear a snug-fitting and comfortable mask when necessary.
