Diaphragm Pumps for Filter Press

Air-operated diaphragm pumps serve a critical role in transferring sludge from the sludge storage tank to the filter press. These pumps are particularly effective as they manage slurries with a consistency similar to that of a milkshake.

The operation of the diaphragm pump is initially slow, gradually increasing in speed. A decrease in speed (typically from 30-60 seconds between pumps) signals that the filter press is nearing its capacity. At this moment, the feed pump should be halted, and the filter press valves sealed while the operator readies for the air-blow-down procedure.

Manual adjustments can be made to the diaphragm pump, or an Automatic Pump Control system can be integrated. This system incrementally raises the pressure from 25 psi to 50, 75, and finally to 100 psi, which is recognized as the standard operating pressure.

Met-Chem offers diaphragm pumps in various sizes: 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 inches, constructed from materials such as cast iron, aluminum, polypro, or stainless steel.

With a new Met-Chem filter press purchase, we can install the air-operated diaphragm pump onto the filter press legs. This setup comprises a flexible hose linking the pump outlet to the central feed pipe, including an air filter, regulator, and oiler. We can also provide a mounted diaphragm pump for existing press systems.

Automated Control Systems for Filter Press Pumps

Automated Control Systems for Filter Press Pumps

The Automatic Pump Control Panel incrementally boosts pump pressure to a maximum of 100 PSI for standard units, facilitating uniform filling of filter chambers.

The Met-Chem Automatic Pump Control System operates in conjunction with the air diaphragm pump, automatically adjusting the feed pump pressure at defined intervals throughout the filter press filling cycle. Elevated initial pressures can lead to the filter cake forming a dense layer of solids on the filter cloth, hence restricting slurry flow and potentially blocking filtration. Starting with a lower feed pressure enables a gentler layer of slurry particle deposition on the filter cloth, enhancing slurry filterability.

This automatic system smoothly escalates the feed pressure through four adjustable stages during filling, typically set at increments of 25 psi (25, 50, 75, 100) based on slurry conditions and solid concentrations. The feed pump flow sensor information during the final pressure stage helps the operator ascertain when the cycle is complete.

Additionally, this Pump Control System features a low hydraulic pressure safety shutdown. Should hydraulic clamping pressure be insufficient, the system will completely cease operation, averting leaks between the filter plates.

By optimizing the filter press functioning, this control system leads to dryer filter cakes, reduced disposal costs, decreased operator workload, and extended lifespans for filter cloths and feed pumps.

This system can be seamlessly integrated into new Met-Chem filter presses, refurbished units, or your current setups.

Essential Spare Parts Kit

Essential Spare Parts Kit

Met-Chem proudly offers a spare parts kit, including a five-piece central feed pipe assembly, head, tail, and two middle filter press cloths, along with 100 feet of gasketing material. These components are vital for the filter press's operation. Events like a cracked pipe or damaged cloth may arise at any time, having these items readily available will ensure minimal downtime.

Upgrading Filter Press Center Feed and Manifold

Upgrading Filter Press Center Feed and Manifold

While a center feed pipe assembly on a filter press is designed to last years, corrosive materials can cause degradation. Met-Chem offers upgrades from standard setups to CPVC, Carbon Steel, 304 or 316 Stainless Steel, and even Titanium for adverse conditions.

The assembly connects the filter press to the material requiring filtration and consists of five components including a lock nut, the pipe itself, a gasket for sealing, a clip nut seat, and the cloth clip nut. The latter is frequently removed for a head cloth installation. Met-Chem's Spanner Wrench eases this task by facilitating the tightening and loosening of the cloth clip nut.

Enhanced Disposal Options for Filter Press

Met-Chem provides longer legs and a disposal chute for new filter presses, especially beneficial for directing sludge into bags or drums. The chute ensures sludge is effectively contained during disposal. For larger presses, we can create a catwalk alongside the chute for accommodation of roll-off containers.

Sludge Collection Solutions

Sludge Collection Solutions

Sludge Dumpsters are utilized directly beneath the filter press for collecting sludge released during maintenance. Mounted on casters for ease of mobility with forklift slats for easy maneuvering, the operator can glide the dumpster to a roll-off container and activate the release pin for seamless emptying.

Backer Plate for Adaptation to Smaller Batches

Backer Plate for Adaptation to Smaller Batches

If your facility produces varied wastewater batches leading to less sludge, or a general reduction in waste volume, you can still utilize your existing filter press. Incorporating a backer plate enables alteration of the filter press's holding capacity, accommodating specific batch requirements.

This backer plate supports the tail plate, allowing it to be relocated within the plate pack to isolate chambers effectively. Misplacement without the backer plate can damage the tail plate chamber.

Available backing plates come in different materials, although we recommend using ~3/8 inch thick flat stock steel for visibility and durability, painted with the same two-part epoxy finish as the filter press frame.

Filter Press Plate Adjustment Tools

Filter Press Plate Adjustment Tools

Standard filter presses can be operated manually. However, Met-Chem offers four variations of filter press plate shifters designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and ease of operation compared to manual presses:

  • Semi-Automatic
  • Pendant
  • Fully Automatic
  • Super Shifter

We can also develop a catwalk alongside the disposal chute for larger filtering systems.
