Save Money with Bargain Mummy!

In today's world, shopping at the supermarket while trying to save money can often feel overwhelming. This challenge has only increased since becoming a parent, as managing children during shopping trips can be quite chaotic. Additionally, the rising costs of groceries, particularly fruits and vegetables, only add to the stress.

With a limited budget, it's crucial to make smart choices when it comes to food. The dilemma often arises: should I cut back on fruits and vegetables to afford other items? Fortunately, I've discovered a beneficial alternative: frozen foods. Over the years, I've started to recognize the value in the frozen section of grocery stores. Unlike years past when I overlooked this area, I now frequently turn to frozen vegetables, especially since my busy work schedule allows me to make only one grocery trip a week. Fresh vegetables tend to wilt by mid-week, so having frozen peas and carrots readily available is quite helpful. Not only do they last longer, but their nutritional value can match or even surpass that of fresh produce (source: my experience).

My kids particularly enjoy frozen sweetcorn, which can easily be added to various recipes to enhance flavor and increase bulk, such as in shepherd's pie. I also love using frozen herbs. They provide the same flavor as fresh herbs but without the hassle of spoilage. Fresh herbs often end up as a soggy mess in my fridge within days, leading to waste and unnecessary expenses. By choosing frozen, I can take out just what I need, minimizing waste and saving money.

One of the biggest advantages of frozen foods is their convenience. After a long workday, I often lack the energy to prepare a meal from scratch. Fortunately, a quick glance into my freezer reveals plenty of options ready for cooking.

Another smart strategy is to take advantage of clearance items with yellow stickers. By purchasing these discounted goods and freezing them, especially bread, I can extend their shelf life. Bread can be used straight from the freezer for toasting without sacrificing freshness.

Fun activities with kids can also involve the freezer. We enjoy making homemade ice lollies using fruit juice or even frozen fruit blended into smoothies, placing them in mold and letting them freeze. It's a great way to explore solids and liquids, and results in delicious, cost-effective, and nutritious treats!

We also freeze bananas that are almost overripe, which, once frozen, can be blended into something that tastes akin to heavenly ice cream—an unexpected delight!

How often do you utilize your freezer? What frozen foods do you enjoy the most?

How to Save Big Money on Produce

The produce aisle can be enticing with its vibrant colors, but my grocery shopping approach has evolved. Now, you can often find me in the freezer aisle for several reasons:

  1. Cost Savings: Typically, frozen vegetables are cheaper per weight than their fresh counterparts. Plus, you can often find coupons that make them even more affordable.
  2. Freshness: Believe it or not, frozen vegetables are often fresher. Fresh produce can take days to arrive from various locations, while frozen options are usually processed right after harvest, locking in nutrients.
  3. Nutrient Density: Because frozen veggies are picked at peak maturity before freezing, they often retain more nutrients compared to those that sit on shelves for days.
  4. Easier Meal Preparation: The convenience of grabbing a bag of frozen vegetables saves time on washing and chopping while still providing a nutritious meal. For instance, I can quickly prepare broccoli for a stir-fry in no time!

These four reasons have significantly influenced my frozen food purchasing decisions. Which do you prefer: fresh produce or frozen options?

Interestingly, freeze-dried produce tends to be healthier than conventional store-bought fresh produce, requiring less freezer storage space!

Recently, we've started stocking up on freeze-dried fruits and vegetables in our pantry. This practice helps bridge snack and meal gaps, ensuring we're prepared for emergencies while keeping our kids engaged with tasty freeze-dried snacks.
